Advisory Committee
The Advisory Committee consists of notable South African entrepreneurs, business leaders, and philanthropists who advise, advocate and guide the strategy of SU’s HOPE Project. Members make themselves available to provide the Rector & Vice-Chancellor and Advancement team with counsel and advice on the campaign and Stellenbosch University’s national and international positioning. The Advisory Committee meets twice yearly and members are invited to participate for a period of two years.
Mr Thys Visser
Mr Visser is the Chief Executive Officer of Remgro Limited and has held senior management positions with the Rembrandt Group since 1980. He serves as the Chairperson of Rainbow Chicken Ltd and holds directorships in several other South African companies. Mr Visser is a graduate of Stellenbosch University and Chairperson of the Stellenbosch Trust.
Prof Botman was appointed Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University in 2007 and has been associated with the University since 2000. He is an internationally-known theologian, leader and ecumenical role-player. In 1989, he received a special award from the Town Council of Milwaukee (Minn) as a leading champion for justice and humanness and in 2001 he was a nominee of the Desmond Tutu Leadership Awards Educational Trust.
Mr Sidego is a former South African Ambassador to Denmark and career journalist. He is also former Senior General Manager (Corporate Affairs) at Media24. He is a director of the Exceed Group, a fiduciary and financial services firm and also Director of Communications at Buildman, a construction company. Mr Sidego is a Trustee of the Stellenbosch Trust.
Mr Mouton is Executive Chairperson of the PSG Group Ltd. He also serves as Chairperson and Director of various companies within the PSG Group and serves on the boards of Zeder Investments, Kaap Agri, Steinhoff International and the KWV. He is the founder and former Chairperson of Capitec Bank. Mr Mouton is a graduate of Stellenbosch University and a Trustee of the Stellenbosch Trust. He is also a former member of the Council of Stellenbosch University.
Mr Steyn is former executive director of the Rembrandt Group and former director of Remgro. He is president of the Stellenbosch Golf Club. He is a graduate of Stellenbosch University and a Trustee of the Stellenbosch Trust. He is also a former member of the Council of Stellenbosch University.
Mr Smith is Chairperson of both RGS Reinsurance Company of South Africa and Santam Ltd. He holds directorships in several companies and in June 2009, he was appointed as Non-Executive Director of Sanlam Ltd. He is a graduate of Stellenbosch University, is a Trustee of the Stellenbosch Trust and is a member of the Advisory Board of Stellenbosch University Business School (USB). He is also Chairperson of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) and a former Chairperson and member of the Council of Stellenbosch University.
Dr Luhabe is the Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg and founder of the Wendy Luhabe Foundation. She is an accomplished social entrepreneur and a co-founder of the Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold). She has held directorships in several companies e.g. Vodacom Group and Telkom SA. She holds honorary doctorates in commerce from Stellenbosch University and the University of Fort Hare. She is a Trustee of the Stellenbosch Trust.
Mrs Landman is a well respected and award-winning journalist with more than 25 years’ experience. She has worked as a newspaper journalist, on radio, magazines and as TV newsreader. She is former co-anchor of Carte Blanche on M-Net. She has been a Non-Executive Director of Media24 since 2005. Mrs Landman is a Stellenbosch University graduate.
Dr Hertzog is Chairperson of the Medi-Clinic Group and holds directorships in Distell, Remgro, Total (SA) and the Trans Hex Group. He has been awarded the Frans du Toit medal for Leadership in Management in his capacity as Chairperson of Medi-Clinic. He is a graduate of Stellenbosch University and a former Chairperson of the Council.
Dr Bekker is CEO of Naspers Ltd, Africa’s biggest media firm. He has served on the local organising committee for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup. He was inducted into the World Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in June 2007. He is a graduate and honorary doctorate of Stellenbosch University and a member of the Council.
Dr Cluver is a neurosurgeon, apple and wine farmer. His family owns De Rust Estates, the home of Paul Cluver Wines. In February 2010, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the European publication The Drinks Business at the Green Awards. He holds chairmanships in commercial companies within the agricultural sector. He is a Stellenbosch University graduate and Chairperson of the Council. He received an honorary doctorate from the University in 2000.
Mr Markus Jooste
Mr Jooste is the CEO of Steinhoff International and holds directorships in several related companies. He is also a director of the PSG Group and Phumelela Gaming. He is a horse racing enthusiast and is a member of the Highveld Racing Association and Non-Executive Director of The Racing Association. He is a graduate of Stellenbosch University.
Mr du Toit is CEO of Rootstock Investment Management. He also serves on the boards of a number of companies, including Zambia Copper Investment Limited and the PSG Group. He is one of the founding members and former CEO of Coronation Fund Managers. Mr du Toit is a graduate of Stellenbosch University.
Mrs Erna Meaker
Mrs Meaker graduated with a BA (’75) and BA Hons (’76) from the University and while a student lived in Lydia (74) and Heemstede (’73). She was born on 7 November 1954 and matriculated from Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof and is also a Trustee of the Stellenbosch Trust. She is married to Mr Paul Meaker a graduate of Stellenbosch University and a director of Cluver Markotter Attorneys. The couple have three children – Frank, Lorraine and Paula - who are all graduates of Stellenbosch University.
