TsamaHub (Centre for Transdisciplinarity,Sustainability, Assessment, Modelling and Analysis)

The TsamaHub (Centre for Transdisciplinarity, Sustainability, Assessment, Modelling and Analysis) aims to search for and work towards long-term, sustainable solutions to the sustainability crisis facing the African continent. It kicked off its core Transdisciplinary PhD programme in Sustainability and Complexity Studies in January 2010 with an intake of 12 students.

The programme is offered by Stellenbosch University (SU) as part of its HOPE Project in partnership with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Sustainability Institute (SI).  The TsamaHub is located in the University’s School of Public Management and Planning, which is linked to the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. The partnership’s objective is to be seen as pioneers in establishing a knowledge base for a sustainable world.

Although the whole world is united on the need to prepare for a more sustainable future, how to go about it, poses a real challenge. The core logic of the TsamaHub flagship doctoral programme is to cater for a global audience who are interested in doing research on problems that cannot be dealt with within a particular discipline.

The core activities of the TsamaHub are to develop learning and teaching modules, such as the doctoral programme, to conduct applied solution-oriented sustainability research, to interact with stakeholders in the conceptualisation, production and delivery of research projects, and to assist stakeholders with policy development and change.

The TsamaHub, working together with the Sustainability Institute, supports the Stellenbosch Mayor-Rector Forum,  which is a partnership between Stellenbosch University and Stellenbosch Municipality aimed at making Stellenbosch a Sustainable University Town. This is being done through close collaboration with the Stellenbosch Municipality and the Social Cohesion Initiative which is a coalition of community and business stakeholders.
